Mountain Singers - History

copyright - Joseph Poppy

The mountain singers live as they have always lived in minneapolis, mn (USA).
Currently the mountain singers are bill.

The first mountain singers recording was done one cold and wintery evening in 1986.
It was basically noise. This led to various shows that consisted of tape loops, countless
digital delays, many distortion pedals and a few pop filled melodies. Usually these shows
were held in basements or rural state universities.

The affordability of the sampler added a new element to the band. The songs became less
noisy and more melodic. Many shows were played in midwestern bars. We were the least
favorite band of an Uptown Bar bartender, still we played there 15 to 20 times. Each visit
brought on yet another version of Happy Birthday to this unnamed bartender.

The band grew in size. Two. Then three. Next four. And occasionally five.

Finally the band imploded and returned to it's origin. One.

Recordings continue. New songs finally started showing up in 2006. Slowly.

First new material in 37 years. Parole is a funny thing. You would think that life would just go back to normal, but there are just so many things holding you back. Hopefully I can stay on the straight and narrow and you will have more songs soon.

Ta-Hu-Wa-Hu-Wai

9 from the mountain people. Another leap forward in style. One song has a string section. One song is about cold weather killing the bees that are trying to kill you. There is dazzling horn playing all over the place. The whole band kicks it on some songs, and the king of the mountain sings alone on others. This is better than any songs you've heard at Walton Mountain family picnics. Comes in a lovely package printed on grocery bag paper.

9 song cassette
Released October 1996.

Corn Sweetener

The follow up to one of the more powerful ep's ever released. 14 new gems with a head full of humor & hummable hiccups. Ethnic numbers, electronic ditties, jazz/blues spins, and memorable odes. Do you like cello as much as I do? Grasp it.

Chicken E.P.

Strike up any ol' band and watch 'em melt in the shadow of the Mountain Singers. For songs in the traditional Teamsters key. When the pickle jar is used properly the vocal treatments will astound you. Anyone with the brains of Job will know how to sing along the first time they listen to this beauty. Galvanized.

4 song 7" E.P

Live At The Newport Jazz-Folk Festival 1983 (I'm In Love)

All the advantages of modern technology crammed into one guy with the efficiency of a Toyota. Rewire the toaster with a glue gun for all the ambiance of being passed by a tractor trailer with no muffler. Who needs band members when you have boxes that go beep.

Released July 1993.
