KING WHO PRESENTS:

THE LATEST SOUNDS TO SEEK OUT
SONIC YOUTH
NYC GHOSTS & FLOWERS

i'm just gonna start off by saying
that this is a triumphant return to form
at least the form i love for sonic youth
the last decade has brought us many man
sonic youth records
but i have not been blown away by a single one
oh sure there have been tons of great moments
i have liked every one of them
but loved them
no
until now
this goes straight to my heart that loved
their albums evol, sister and daydream nation
expect it is even more mature than all of those
they have dabbled with rock n roll over the last 5 or 6 albums
and then delved into the avant garde with the last 4 ep's
in some ways this new albums is neither
and in some ways it is both
more avant than rock
the songs really seem to flow and shimmer
at an almost patient pace
there is a lot of space to get lost in too
the lyrics are even more poetic than most
and it does not have any air of pretension
sometimes the songs don't really even seem to build
and usually that bugs me
that can leave a feeling of not getting anywhere
but with this album you get the feeling you are already there
there are very few big riffs or large singalong choruses
but the melody lines are constant and memorable
i detect an attitude where the alternative rock
revolution is over and sonic youth is still standing tall
the pressure (even if it was not felt by them) is gone
the sun is out
but its not glaring in their eyes
time to relax and soak in the beauty of it all
